St. Patrick's Week Events

ST. PATRICK’S DAY is just about upon us and there are three local events celebrating the fact over the next week. The first St. Paddy’s event in the locality was organised by the village of Daya Nueva, for others to follow. On Sunday March 13th, their annual St Patrick’s Celebrations will take place, traditionally the Sunday before March 17, to allow the locals to celebrate with event visitors whose numbers are growing each year.

This year’s special guests include the honorary Irish consul Mr Rory Byrne and Marisun Prieto Candella who is the councillor for international relations and women’s affairs in the Alicante government. Also in attendance will be the Mayors of Daya Nueva, Daya Viega, Rojales and Benijofar .The celebrations begin with the blessing of a newly commissioned banner of St Patrick followed by noon mass with the parish choir. This will be followed at 1300-hrs by a parade through the streets of the village to the town hall where a flag raising ceremony and playing of the anthems will take place. The parade will be led by the Club Torrevieja Classics and Specialists Cars along with other classic car owners plus the Pipes and Drums from Torrevieja followed by the Paseo of St. Patrick on foot.

The parade featuring the new banner and the statue of St Patrick will be accompanied by representatives from all the associations of the surrounding areas. The local Band of Union Musica San Miguel Arcangel will accompany the parade alongside the members of Protection Civil from Rojales. After the Town Hall ceremony, the local bars and restaurants will serve both Spanish and Irish Cuisine followed at 1530-hrs with a free public concert in the square beside the church. On stage will be the traditional Irish group Bardoi who will be joined by The Pipes and Drums and dancers from Torrevieja as well as local singing group New Alliance. The concert will be presented by the world famous Andy Ramage who has retired to live in Daya Nueva.

On the Orihuela Costa they also have an annual and traditional St Patrick´s Day Fiesta in Playa Flamenca, which is organised by the Orihuela Costa Town Hall and take places on 16th, 17th and 18th March by the Lidl Supermarket. A first this year is a a massive parade and party is planned for the actual day of St Patrick in Cabo Roig. The event will take place along the strip on Thursday 17th March and everyone is welcome. Organisers say that the Cabo Roig strip will turn into a sea of green for the day, with all the bars and restaurants offering all things Irish. There will be food, drink, traditional Irish music, dance and hospitality as well as face painting and bouncy castles for the kids.

The parade promises to be a spectacular and colourful event with several local and Irish dignitaries attending, including popular Sligo Councillor, Gerry Lundy. The parade will be led by an Irish Pipe Band, a cavalcade of vintage cars, ex Irish Army members will be represented, a pageant of beauty queens, a horse drawn carriage and much, much more.

The local bars and restaurants will be well represented in the parade along with coastal residents from neighbouring urbanisations and it is hoped that this will be the first event that will lead to it becoming the largest St Patrick´s Day parade on the Costa Blanca. There will also be competitions, prizes and give-aways. The parade will be marshalled by Paddy Keogh and starts at 16:30-hrs from the Marina Sol Apartment Block in Aguamarina and will go along the strip before coming back along Calle Mar.

As the saying goes, “There are those that are Irish and those that wish they were!” But over the next week, everyone is welcome to wear the green and be Irish for a day or two. Enjoy ‘St. Paddy’s’ day and make the effort to see what all the fuss and fun is about at Daya Neuva and on the Orihuela Costa.
